Santorum is High Maintenance

I can't be the only one who has noticed this. The dude is whiny as hell. First it's "ew, gay people, y'all are perves and should stop doing anything ever," then it was "most Republicans, y u no liek me?" Now it's "MOOOOOM! Tell Google to stop picking on me." With all this complaining, Rick Santorum has done an excellent job of painting himself as an innocent victim. Which, you know, is exactly what everyone wants in a president. . . .

Oh wait.

I realize that Santorum probably can't afford proper handlers due to the fact that nobody with any sense would ever give him a dime, but it's amazing to me that the staff he does have thinks that it's advantageous to allow their presidential candidate to display this level helplessness. I mean, what happens if he gets elected and people want to put pressure on him to make decisions? Will he be able to handle it? If his decision backfires, will he stand by it or will he blame some third-party for bullying him, the president, into making a decision he didn't truly support?

Even when he's trying to look presidential, Rick just looks sad.

This apparent weakness of character is actually pretty far down the line of issues with Rick Santorum - he has no discernible good qualities - but I do think it warrants attention because it's something that should make even his most ardent supporters think twice. Surely the extreme social conservatives would rather have a bully than a victim in their corner. And the fact of the matter is that Rick Santorum hasn't actually been a bully for about eight years.

Why? Because we beat him. And we're a website about poopy lube started by a sex advice columnist. Honestly.

  2. Somebody's ass must be burning to free himself enough time to start a campaign like this. Perhaps he can't stand the pressure of his name being insulted like this, but homos do not have the balls (!!!) to stand that society in general reject them.

  3. Don't have the balls? We are roughly 5 percent of the population and yet we are one of the most highly debated issues in our country. We stand for our right to live how we want with whomever we want despite the public disapproval directed at us. Who else has fought harder for their civil liberties in the face of such discrimination in the last fifty years? I call that balls.

  4. What's interesting to me is that I know Dan from his NPR pieces. As a listener, no more. But as one who heard him talk with an open heart about the passing of his father (search on This American Life web site) or his relationship with his partner and adopting of their son.
So when this site came to my attention, my first thought was "wow, this Santorum guy must be pretty awful for Dan to react this way", and after a bit of reading, I find he is. And I understand there comes a point where one is pushed to wanting to sling mud back, figuratively, of course, but effectively in this case. Before judging Dan (which, let's face it, the same religious people do so have a directive not to judge at all, pretty ironic, that) learn who he is by listening to him talk at the radio show I mentioned.

  6. Southern Axis, what are you doing in here? Better watch out, someone might take your picture and show it to your wife. But don't worry. She probably suspects something already. For her sake could you try to be a little less obvious, though?
